Intel, Nokia plan joint mobile operating system

In this article, Intel and Nokia plan a new operating system called MeeGo.  Intel will use Moblin, a mobile computer operating system with Nokia cell phones.  It is going to be unveiled at the Mobil World Congress Conference in Barcelona.

New classes of smart phones and mobile computers are gaining popularity with customers and Nokia needs a new marketing product.  Nokia leads its industry in cell phone production.

Meego is based on Linux computer operating systems and is hosted by the Linux Foundation.  Intel and Nokia are hoping for their product to be used by manufactures in products.  Meego products will be available for sale before the end of 2010.

  1. This is a intersting article. The idea of a new revolutionary operating system that will top that of the Iphone or the Blackberry is beoyond some years. If this project is successfull it will expand and start a new generation of smart phones and computer operating systems.

  2. I like the idea of a opensource operating system for mobile phones. I've noticed that similiar phones on different networks are capable of different things. This is because the carrier can choose what services they're willing to host on their network. These are very similiar circumstances that led to the development of linux. Microsoft was dominating the industry with windows, they controlled what software could be run on their operating systems. Hopefully this will help free us all from mobile tyranny.

  3. It will be very interesting to see what direction smart phones go as both more companies and more operating systems are offered. Smart phones started out all offering the same basic functions, but as there becomes more competition I'm sure we will start seeing some new revolutionary functions available in cell phones. I think we need this kind of new competition in personal computers now too, and even in other products. Competition is what keeps technology advancing.

  4. I wonder if there is even still room for Intel and Nokia in the smartphone industry. As the article says, Nokia is already having problems in the industry, and isn't experiencing nearly the amount of growth that other companies are. There are already so many competitors out there with Apple, Google, Palm, BlackBerry, etc. that I think it will be very difficult for them to gain any kind of advantage over the other companies. Some of the companies involved with smartphones are already struggling a little, so it will be interesting to see if they can get people to buy a new product with new OS. While I do like the idea of a Linux based OS for smartphones, their success will depend on how well they manage to implement it. Even great ideas won't work out if they can't be implemented properly.

  5. It will be interesting to see how the MeeGo operating system changes or revolutionizes the smart phone. In the past Nokia has been a less expensive phone than other manufacturer such as Motorola, Blackberry, and Apple. It will be interesting if Nokia's smart phone sells for less than competitors smart phones even though Nokia's phones will be using cutting edge technology. It will also be interesting to see how Nokia breaking into the smart phone industry effects the sales between the smart phone giants Blackberry and Apple.
